CO: Pueblo County puts higher pot tax on ballot

Ortiz said the first 50% of (marijuana) excise tax dollars are allocated toward scholarships. The second 50% are allocated toward capital infrastructure projects.

The proposal to change marijuana taxes passed unanimously. The measure — tentatively being called measure 1B — is a restructuring of marijuana taxes that would provide about $3.5 million annually. The measure would raise marijuana sales tax from 3.5% to 6%, which would align Pueblo County with other rates in the state. It would also keep the existing allocations to the scholarship program.

“Obviously there would be an increase in marijuana retail sales tax. Capital infrastructure that were proposed in 2015 are being completed so there has to be another use for those monies so that is certainly a potential use,” Ortiz said.

Ortiz said the first 50% of (marijuana) excise tax dollars are allocated toward scholarships. The second 50% are allocated toward capital infrastructure projects.

“Marijuana retail sales tax has been discretionary and will continue to remain discretionary.”
