Herders in Magadi concerned by dangers exposed to them by ‘Mathenge’ weed

Herders in Magadi, Kajiado county are concerned by the dangers exposed to them by the dangerous Prosopis juliflora locally known as Mathenge. The leafy tree has covered most of the herding grounds leaving the herders with less grazing ground. Locals claim that the tree has left their animals without teeth and killing some. The tree is resilient to drought conditions, which makes it appealing to the animals. Residents also say that the thorns are dangerous and has led to dozens of amputations. Residents have complained that the tree has posed a major threat to the pastrolists way of life. The tree is also found in Kajiado central and part of Kajiado south.
