Marijuana and Sex
Can Marijuana Enhance Your Sex Life?
With Valentine’s Day around the corner and more states with legal Cannabis than ever before, many are wondering if this wonder drug can spice up their plans for the most romantic night of the year. But can consuming marijuana actually enhance the quality of your sex life?
Ask anyone from the Cannabis industry and the answer will be a resounding, ‘YES’. Thanks to the popularity of marijuana a number of companies have introduced strains and edibles to enhance sex. The most common sex products to emerge with legalization are Cannabis infused lubricants typically made from Cannabis infused coconut oils that claim to enhance sensation and arousal in women. But do these products work? Let’s examine the connection between Sex and Marijuana.
Examining the relationship between Marijuana and Sex.
Thanks to Marijuana being a Schedule 1 substance in the US, almost all research on the effects of the plant is prohibited. However with legalization of the herb in 31 states and the district of Columbia, researchers have finally been able to study the effects of marijuana particularly how it relates to Sexual arousal.
According to a research study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine (JSM), entitled the Association Between Marijuana Use and Sexual Frequency in the United States: A Population-Based Study, whose goal was to , “To elucidate whether a relation between marijuana use and sexual frequency exists using a nationally representative sample of reproductive-age men and women.” With a sample size of 28176 women and 22943 men who were surveyed by the CDC via a questionnaire, they concluded that, “Marijuana use is independently associated with increased sexual frequency and does not appear to impair sexual function.” In fact, daily users across all demographic groups reported having 20% more sex than those who have never used cannabis.
An additional study published by the JSM to determine if marijuana use before sex affects the sexual experience, by how much, and which domains of sexual function are affected found that consumption of small quantities of marijuana before sex may increase libido in female patients. Doctors believe this may be due to the short term anxiety reducing effects of Cannabis. Poor libido is directly linked to stress and anxiety and Cannabis can help keep you calm thus enhancing sexual function.
But while the research indicates that small amounts of Cannabis can increase sexual arousal does this mean that Cannabis enhances sex?
Marijuana and Erectile Dysfunction .
Although no conclusive evidence exists to suggest that marijuana can cause erectile dysfunction a few studies have shown a correlation between the two. A review published in the Journal of Sexual medicine found that regular consumption of marijuana may increase the risk of erectile dysfunction. The study was conducted on animals to determine how marijuana impacts sexual health. The study found that Cannabis has an inhibitory effect on certain receptors inside the erectile tissue of the penis. Due to ethical and legal reasons however such a study has never been actually conducted on humans so its difficult to presume if the findings of this study hold ground or not.

Because CBD is so good at treating conditions like depression, anxiety and insomnia a number of companies have also found a way to market it as an aphrodisiac. The State of Research
Marijuana and sex certainly make strange Bedfellows. While some studies have shown that consumption of small quantities of marijuana may enhance the sexual experience and increase libido, particularly in female patients, contradictory studies have shown that marijuana may contribute to erectile dysfunction in men.
