SFV OG Strain Benefits/Effects
The SFV OG stands for San Fernando Valley OG, the Southern California hometown where the strain was developed by Cali Connection Farms. Although OG Kush is the dominant parent strain of SFV OG in terms of both effects and experience, they are certainly not the same strain, and SFV OG’s Afghani lineage adds significant indica-dominant effects and unusual depth of flavor. (Also note: SFV OG Kush is its own strain, although lesser known, and many confuse and conflate them.)
SFV OG is a 70%/30% indica-dominant hybrid strain that delivers a nice, happy wave of euphoria followed by a warm, smooth rush of Afghan pain relief. SFV OG works well as a medical marijuana strain, with high THC levels between 14 and 26%, and THC content of 20% on average, and certain samples also offer CBD levels of 0.05% to 0.10%.
SFV OG is not as famous as its parent OG Kush in terms of being the backbone of so many other popular West Coast strains, although it has helped create powerhouses like Ghost Train Haze and Tahoe OG. However, especially for medical marijuana patients and experienced cannasseurs, SFV OG is sought after for its well-balanced combination of effects and mellow yet exciting experience. This popularity was solidified in American dispensaries in 2012 when SFV OG went on to win 3rd place indica at the High Times Cannabis Cup—strong enough for indica fans, but great as a hybrid, so to speak. That same year, the SFV OG strain took 1st place at the Denver Cannabis Cup.
Disclaimer: Now, if you have a lot of work on your plate that’s technical or demands a lot of concentration, this may not be your strain. Some users, especially if they’re new to cannabis or consume high amounts of SFV OG, may experience couch lock. But most say that your SFV OG experience will be similar in terms of energy levels to an OG Kush session, so let that be your guide!
SFV OG strain reviews also report feelings of happiness and euphoria that may even induce “no reason” laughter. This is a great strain for those times you just want to be present and enjoy what you’re doing, who you’re with, and escape that pressure cooker you’ve been dealing with.
SFV OG Medical Benefits
SFV OG is known for its medical potency, so medical marijuana patients often select this strain. It is famous for a fast-acting anti-anxiety effect, so if you’re fighting PTSD, a panic disorder, or even just generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) or depression, it can be a lifesaver.
SFV OG is also an excellent strain for treating chronic pain and reducing inflammation. This is no coincidence, because there is a relationship between inflamed nerve cells and panic disorder. Preventing inflammation in the first place can sometimes stop certain kinds of pain such as muscle spasms, and mental stress from happening in the first place.
Finally, SFV OG is a good choice for anyone needing an appetite boost. If you have a condition such as anorexia nervosa, or you’re a cancer patient enduring the nausea of chemotherapy, or even just struggling with nausea from Crohn’s disease or migraines, you can amp up your appetite with SFV OG and start feeling hungry for food again.
SFV OG Taste and Smell
Like OG Kush, the SFV OG marijuana strain delivers a tart, citrus scent with piney, earthy elements. There is some fuel smell here, although not as strong as the Diesel line. The general effect in terms of aroma is sweet but pungent with some skunk and lemongrass in there in place of that OG Kush spice. The flavor is right in line with that scent, and is really a treat in a vaporizer which gives you all of the flavor and much less of the harsh taste.
SFV OG Cannabinoid/Terpene Profile
The SFV OG strain has an average THC content on average of 20%, with phenotypes ranging from 14% to 26%. SFV OG usually also features CBD levels of 0.05% to 0.10%. Some samples have trace levels of the minor cannabinoid CBG, but you are not likely to find usable amounts of the other minor cannabinoids such as CBC, CBV, and CBN in most samples of the SFV OG strain. Still, with decent amounts of CBD, classic high THC side effects such as dry mouth and dry eyes shouldn’t be as much of a problem for SFV OG users.
[Note that most versions of SFV OG are indica-dominant, but there are versions that are a sativa-dominant hybrid. Look for terpene profiles to settle the matter if you’re unsure.]
SFV OG is rich in the terpenes Linalool and Myrcene, with moderate amounts of Humulene and Limonene, and smaller amounts of Caryophyllene.
Linalool, among the oldest known sleep aids in the world, is well-known for its anti-anxiety, stress-relieving, and antidepressant benefits. Myrcene is known for calming herbal benefits and treating pain.
Humulene also soothes pain and can boost—or in some cases calm the appetite, if it is too active. Limonene is famous for its energizing, uplifting benefits which treat anxiety and stress and raise the mood. It is also an antibacterial and antifungal, and enhances digestion.
Caryophyllene is an anti-inflammatory that relieves pain, and also an antioxidant. It can also treat anxiety and stress.
SFV OG History and Genetics
A relative of the OG Kush strain, its dominant strain parent, SFV OG was created by the Cali Connection farms breeders in the San Fernando Valley. Initially this strain was actually a phenotype of OG Kush, until Southern California grower Swerve bred it with a Homegrown Fantaseeds Afghani landrace. The result is the SFV OG we know and love today.
If You Love SFV OG Marijuana, Try These Strains
If you love the sedation, feelings of wellness and relaxed mood you get from Bubba Kush, Triangle Kush, or Kosher Kush, but maybe want a shade more uplift and energy, SFV OG is a wonderful strain to try. Maybe that happy vibe from Berry White or Banana Kush are more your thing—but you’re more a fan of complex flavor than flat out fruity or sweet? SFV OG is a great strain for that.
If you want a similar mood and flavor but more relaxation and a generally more indica vibe than Sour OG or Lemonhead OG—but not quite as heavy as the 9 Pound Hammer or Afghani—you will find SFV OG is right in the zone.
Growing the SFV OG Strain
With a classic OG structure, SFV OG bursts with dense, round wintergreen buds with fairly sparse pistils. Beginners can grow SFV OG seeds, but it does take some work.
Outdoors, SFV OG is ready for harvest by the beginning of October and yields around 13 ounces per plant. A dry, mild climate such as that of the San Fernando Valley is the kind that is friendliest to this cannabis plant.
Indoors, SFV OG flowering time is 8 to 10 weeks, and it yields about 12 ounces per square meter. Exact harvest time will vary depending on grower goals. For a sedative high, allow most pistils to change color. For a more euphoric high, harvest sooner.
SFV OG is a strain that demands lots of water and nutrients—and therefore, attention. This is not just because you need to give the plants nutrients and water often, but also because overfeeding and nutrient burn are common errors. Many growers use the reverse osmosis water technique and aim to maintain pH levels between 6.0 and 6.5.
Regular topping is important for the SFV OG strain. Allowing the plants to vegetate for at least 20 to 21 days enables them to branch out more, and then you can ensure you trim and top regularly to maintain the plants. SFV OG is a leggy plant with dense canopies, and most of their weight comes on in the last two weeks. This strain is ideal for SCROG, and we recommend pruning beneath the branches and anywhere light may have trouble reaching for dense nugs.
