California: Bill AB 228– which would formally legalize the retail sale of hemp products such as CBD – is in the final stages. The Senate Appropriations Committee meets on August 30 to consider amendments to the bill that will impose labeling requirements and, if passed, will head to the Senate floor and back to the House for final concurrence. Mississippi: Mississippi, one of three states – including South Dakota and Idaho – without a hemp program, has created a Hemp Cultivation Task Force. We encourage Mississippians to use our State Action Center to encourage your legislators to permit the growing of hemp and the retail sale of hemp products like CBD.

Pennsylvania: Senate Bill 335– which would explicitly permit the sale of ingestible hemp products like CBD – is on the move. The Roundtable has provided its formal recommendations for improvements, but legislators need to hear from their constituents. If you live in Pennsylvania, please visit our State Action Center today and urge your legislators to support SB 335.

Nevada: In passing Senate Bill 209 this summer, Nevada has expanded its hemp growth program, and explicitly permitted the retail sale of hemp products like CBD, with testing and labeling requirements. Stay tuned to this space as Nevada develops its regulations to implement this new law.

New Mexico: The New Mexico Environmental Department has issued temporary rules for the growth of hemp and the sale of hemp products. The Roundtable submitted its formal comments which focus on labeling and manufacturing requirements. HEAVY rain and drought have contributed to Jamaica’s “worst ever” marijuana shortage – with locals calling it a “national embarrassment”.

Activists say they believe the Covid-19 pandemic and a loosening of Jamaica’s marijuana laws has led to a huge increase in local consumption. A brokerage firm for the island nation’s small but growing legal cannabis industry says a rise in usage during lockdown has led to supplies running low. The 2020 hurricane season and a devastating drought also caused tens of thousands of pounds in losses, according to farmers who cultivate cannabis outside the legal system – where a majority of people still buy the drug for cheap on the street. Chief opportunity explorer at Tacaya, Triston Thompson, also said Covid rules have also stopped farmers tending crops after they were ravaged by a bad season last year.

“Last year was the worst year. We’ve never had this amount of loss,” Thompson said.

“It’s something so laughable that cannabis is short in Jamaica. It’s a cultural embarrassment.”

In Jamaica the drug has been decriminalised in small amounts – vut much of the market remains illegal.

The governments Cannabis Licensing Authority – which has authorised 29 cultivators and issued 73 licenses – said there is no shortage of marijuana in the regulated industry. But farmers and activists say weed sold via legal “herb houses” is out of reach for many – because it costs five to 10 times more than pot on the street. This comes on top of a sharp decline in ganja-seeking tourists heading to the island in search of the drug.

Paul Burke, CEO of Jamaica’s Ganja Growers and Producers Association, said users are now not afraid of being prosecuted now the government allows possession of small amounts. He said the stigma associated with cannabis has diminished, with more people using the drug during the Covid-19 pandemic for its alleged therapeutic and medicinal benefits.mBurke also said that some traditional small farmers have stopped growing as they can’t afford to meet requirements for the legal market. Meanwhile, police are continuing to waste and destroy what Burke described as “good” ganja fields that are not included in the legal market.

Jamaica, which foreigners have long associated with pot, reggae and Rastafarians, authorized a regulated medical marijuana industry and decriminalised small amounts of the drug in 2015.

People caught with 2 ounces (56 grams) or less of cannabis are liabel to pay a small fine and face no arrest or criminal record.

The island also allows individuals to cultivate up to five plants, and Rastafarians are legally allowed to smoke cannabis for sacramental purposes.

I am a 68 year old woman who was diagnosed with Lupus, five years ago. Prior to that I endured surgeries totaling more than 15!

I was taking steroids, anti-rejection drug, high blood pressure as well as other drugs for lupus. Yet, I still was in pain! 24/7. Then here came sciatica–along with all the other pain!

I have been a believer in cannabis for quite some time and here is the blessing. My son brought me a bottle of 1,000 units of CBD oil. I have been taken in for approximately 6-8 weeks. I now no longer need steroids, high blood pressure, not anti-rejection drugs. I am stronger, my bowels are better!

I feel so…much better! Went to Lupus doctor, and he was smiling when he walked in! “Ms. Miles, I told you that you needed that anti-rejection medicine! Your numbers are looking GREAT! Much better than I have seen before! I then informed his that I had discontinued most of the medications prescribed; and was taking CBD oil! He said “well, it must be working!” Keep on doing what you are doing!

I am so grateful for this medicine but it is expensive and not covered by insurance! All the herbs and vitamins that work, a person often has the means to purchase. The problem is that cannabis is expensive!

My CBD oil is $80.00 + tax, I need at least 2 bottles per month! That’s an additional $160.00 on a fixed income. Am anxiously awaiting the prices to come down.
